Leveraging community-based sustainable development through intangible cultural heritage:
three safeguarding approaches under the framework of the UNESCO 2003 Convention
Date: November 25-29, 2024
Location: National Museum of the Romanian Peasant, Bucharest (Romania)
The capacity building workshop in Romania will equip participants with a practical mindset to respond to their direct professional needs in culture management, museology, environmental conservation, heritage education, youth engagement, community initiatives and local development projects. The activity aims to enhance human resources and targeted professional skills for intangible cultural heritage safeguarding in Romania within a sustainable development perspective while ensuring community empowerment, local participation and social equity.
This initiative is organized by the Regional Centre for Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in South-Eastern Europe under the auspices of UNESCO and the Ministry of Culture of Romania with the support of the National Museum of the Romanian Peasant in Bucharest.
The workshop will provide key information about the UNESCO 2003 Convention, the up-to-date vision and strategy of its implementation, and the main working concepts in the field of intangible cultural heritage in connection with the sustainable development goals. A gamification approach will be implemented to leverage participatory learning and engage trainees in interactive role-playing and real-world situations. The trainees are from diverse professional fields and ages and their successful participation will contribute to the implementation of the national strategy for intangible cultural heritage safeguarding in Romania.
The capacity-building activities are facilitated by Ioana Baskerville, Romanian expert in community engagement and intangible cultural inventorying and research, and Julio Sa Rego, Portuguese expert in land stewardship and local rural development. They are members of UNESCO’s Global network of facilitators under the UNESCO 2003 Convention.
